September 10, 2013.. We moved from Mammoth Hot Springs to the Madison area of Yellowstone. It took quite a while to make the 34 mile drive since we stopped often to look at things, take photos or take short walks on trails. We have not had Internet since we left Mammoth except when we went into the small town of West Yellowstone for a short time. I didn’t have time to post anything when we were there.
On the drive to Madison, we passed by lots of area that was burned during the big 1988 fire. It is still easy to see where it was and the area is still recovering.
One of the things we have enjoyed at Madison campground is the fireside ranger talks at night at the amphitheater near the campground. If you have never been to one of these, let me try to tell you what it is like. We attended one each night we were at Madison. They start at 8pm, which means by starting time it is getting dark. The air is a little brisk and we are sitting on seats made from rough cut lumber. There is a nice fire going inside the fire ring and a quarter moon overhead. In the distance, we can hear the elk bugling one time after another. The Madison River is a short distance behind the screen at the amphitheater. The ranger presents his interesting information using a projector and a computer slide show onto a large screen. We learn things about the park or the creatures in it we could not have learned any other way. The talks last 45 minutes to an hour. Then, we walk back to our campsite which is about an eighth of a mile away. This is one of the big advantages of staying at a National Park campgrounds. We attend these fireside ranger talks whenever we get the opportunity.
September 11, 2013.. We drove back north today to go to several geyser basins including the Norris geyser basin where Steamboat Geyser is located. It does not erupt often and sometimes goes as long as 50 years without erupting. I heard on the news when we were back home that it had erupted. They even interviewed someone that had witnessed the eruption. That was on July 31 this year. I asked a ranger how long it lasted and he said 9 minutes. We did lots of walking today and lots of photo taking. We had to hurry to get back to the campground in time for the fireside ranger talk. The high temperature today was about 75 but it got down to 36 last night.
September 12, 2013.. Light rain started this morning in Yellowstone. I had time before the rain started to take a walk over to the Madison River and get a few photos and video of a bull elk on the prowl. We did a bit of thinking to decide what would be a good thing to do on a rainy day in Yellowstone. We decided to come back to the town of West Yellowstone and go to the Imax theater. We saw a movie on Yellowstone. It was great. Since it was drizzling rain and I have Internet again, I thought it would be a good time to catch up on the blog. The low temperature last night was 44. It looks like it is not going to get as cold as they forecast. I hope I am right. Tomorrow, we leave Madison campground and head to the Grant Village area of Yellowstone.
I don't know when we will have Internet again.
None of the white in the photos is snow.
Here are some photos I made since I last posted any.
Gibbon Falls
Pearl Spring...It was easy to see why it is called that.
